What is the Paleo Diet?
In the world we live in today, dieting is something most of us do, in some shape or form. You could say it has become a way of life for many of us. However, to understand the myriad of diets out there you will need at least a PhD in nutrition. It has become very hard for people to find which diet will suit them, so they tend to jump from one to the ‘next big thing’ and it all ends up with little progress. What is so fantastic about the Paleo diet is that because it is based on the very first humans that walked this earth, it is a diet that anyone could follow and that you body will love.
The Paleo diet comes from the well known Stone Age, that occurred millions of years ago. Another name for the Paleo diet is the ‘Hunter-Gatherer Diet’, because everything they ate back then was either hunted (meat and seafood) or gathered (vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc). Basically, the Paleo diet applies to age old principles from the time before farming and modern agriculture, and incorporates it into the diet of the modern man, woman and child. The basic foundation of the Paleo diet is that the genes inside our bodies are suited to the kinds of food consumed by our ancestors. It contains foods with very high nutritional value, such as seafood, lean meat, fruit, vegetables and nuts. It steers away from the types of food introduced at a later stage in evolution, such as diary products, grains, salt and sugar, as they are hard for our bodies to digest and has the potential of leading to both heart disease, diabetes and various cancers.
There are numerous athletes that follow the Paleo diet due to its high concentration of protein-rich foods. In addition to being high in protein, the Paleo diet is also low in carbohydrates, which gives it a low calorie count and a low GI. Research has shown that diets low in carbohydrates can prevent the formation of coronary heart disease. The Paleo diet is also very high in fiber, which can help decreasing the risk of diabetes and heart disease as well as being a key ingredient in weight loss.
How many people do you know with food allergies? Now, how many of those are allergic to fruit, vegetables and meat? Not many, right? Now, how many allergic to diary and gluten? They are everywhere. It seems like we are having an outbreak of lactose/casein and gluten intolerances and clinics are popping up everywhere to help these people cope. The beauty about the Paleo diet is that it does not contain any gluten or casein so it is the perfect diet for anyone who suffers from allergies. Finally, because the Paleo diet is based on foods consumed before the agricultural revolution, none of the foods contain any added salt or sugar, trans- or saturated fats, hydrogenated oils, which all can lead to serious heart disease and significant health issues. If you choose the follow the Paleo diet, you are significantly increasing the likelihood of having a healthy life, without disease.
